Child Labour composition
Bangladesh is one of the poorest countries in the world. Most people here live below the poverty line. They cannot afford their basic necessities properly. Here the average family size is big. As many families have low income or fewer earners than eating mouths, they engage their children in various earning activities to supplement the family income. Thus child labour is on the increase. In fact, child labor has become a serious socio-economic problem in Bangladesh. It is a curse of our society, a satire of our development programs.
Labour is a matter of dignity. But child labour is considered a matter of disgrace for a nation because children are the future of a nation. If childhood is wasted in manual labor. and in shouldering the family’s needs, if the children are deprived of their rights to education and other privileges, they will not be able to lead the nation in the future. In effect, they become a long-standing burden on the nation.
There are certain causes of child labour. Poverty is the root cause. As poor people can hardly maintain their families and educate their children, the education of the children is stopped at an early age and they are forced to do various manual labour to support their families. Low pay is another cause of child labour. Often employers offer low pay for certain jobs which grown-ups do not do.
Child labour is a sad reality of modern urban and industrial society. Children are like flowers. At this age, they are to go to school and there will be books and pens in their hands. But the tough and cruel reality forces many children to leave school or not go to school at all. Instead, they take up hammers, buckets, and handles of rickshaws or vans in their hands, and remain unfed, half-clad, and barefooted. Thus, their sad and heart-rending condition highlights only the distressed condition of the nation.
Child labour destroys the sweet period of childhood and faces children with the stark realities of life. Wherever children are employed whether it is domestic work or factory work, whether it is rickshaw pulling or working in a shop or hotel, they are abused, maltreated, paid low, and deprived of their due rights by their employer. Children work for longer periods, suffer various mistreatments, work in unhealthy and unfavorable conditions, and what is sorrowful, they are not given due wages. Child labour is cheap labour. Many children do the work of the adults, and other do risky and dangerous work, but they do not get any sympathy or love from anybody.
Govt. and NGOs should work together to root out this evil from society. For this, the poverty alleviation program must be strengthened and widened. The social security network should also be extended. Strict laws should be enacted and enforced against employing children in manual work. Govt. must ensure that children do not drop out of school and get the right to education. The rich and able persons of society can also come forward in this regard.
Children’s work should never be desired in society. Bangladesh is conforming to UNICEF’s “say yes to children” program which includes 15 things for the children. We must try to maintain that and ensure a peaceful, carefree, and secure world for our children. Otherwise, we will have to suffer in the long run caused of this social problem.

শ্রম একটি মর্যাদার বিষয়। কিন্তু শিশুশ্রম একটি জাতির জন্য কলঙ্কজনক বিষয় হিসেবে বিবেচিত হয়, কারণ শিশুরাই একটি জাতির ভবিষ্যৎ। কায়িক পরিশ্রমে যদি শৈশব নষ্ট হয়। এবং পরিবারের প্রয়োজনে শিশুরা যদি তাদের শিক্ষার অধিকার এবং অন্যান্য সুযোগ-সুবিধা থেকে বঞ্চিত হয়, তাহলে তারা ভবিষ্যতে জাতিকে নেতৃত্ব দিতে পারবে না। কার্যত তারা জাতির উপর দীর্ঘস্থায়ী বোঝা হয়ে দাঁড়ায়।
শিশুশ্রমের কিছু নির্দিষ্ট কারণ রয়েছে। দারিদ্র্যই মূল কারণ। দরিদ্র লোকেরা তাদের পরিবারকে খুব কমই চালাতে পারে এবং তাদের সন্তানদের শিক্ষিত করতে পারে, তাই ছোট বয়সে শিশুদের লেখাপড়া বন্ধ হয়ে যায় এবং তারা তাদের পরিবারের ভরণপোষণের জন্য বিভিন্ন কায়িক শ্রম করতে বাধ্য হয়। কম বেতন শিশুশ্রমের আরেকটি কারণ। প্রায়ই নিয়োগকর্তারা কিছু কাজের জন্য কম বেতনের প্রস্তাব দেন যা বড়রা করে না।
শিশুশ্রম আধুনিক নগর ও শিল্প সমাজের একটি করুণ বাস্তবতা। শিশুরা ফুলের মতো। এই বয়সে তাদের স্কুলে যেতে হবে এবং তাদের হাতে বই-কলম থাকবে। কিন্তু কঠিন ও নিষ্ঠুর বাস্তবতা অনেক শিশুকে স্কুল ছাড়তে বা একেবারেই স্কুলে যেতে বাধ্য করে না। পরিবর্তে তারা তাদের হাতে হাতুড়ি, বাসকেট এবং রিকশা বা ভ্যানের হ্যান্ডেল নেয়, অখাদ্য, আধপোড়া এবং খালি পায়ে থাকে। সুতরাং, তাদের দুঃখজনক এবং হৃদয়বিদারক অবস্থা জাতির দুরবস্থাকেই তুলে ধরে।
শিশুশ্রম শৈশবের মধুর সময়কে নষ্ট করে দেয় এবং জীবনের কঠিন বাস্তবতার সাথে শিশুদের মুখোমুখি হয়। যেখানেই শিশুদের নিযুক্ত করা হয় তা হয় গৃহস্থালির কাজ বা কারখানার কাজ, হয় রিকশা চালানো বা দোকান বা হোটেলে কাজ করা, তাদের নিয়োগকর্তার দ্বারা লাঞ্ছিত, দুর্ব্যবহার, কম বেতন এবং তাদের প্রাপ্য অধিকার থেকে বঞ্চিত করা হয়। শিশুরা দীর্ঘ সময় ধরে কাজ করে, বিভিন্ন দুর্ব্যবহার সহ্য করে, অস্বাস্থ্যকর ও প্রতিকূল অবস্থায় কাজ করে এবং যা দুঃখজনক, তাদের উপযুক্ত মজুরি দেওয়া হয় না। শিশুশ্রম হল সস্তা শ্রম। অনেক শিশু বড়দের কাজ করে, এবং অন্যরা ঝুঁকিপূর্ণ এবং বিপজ্জনক কাজ করে, কিন্তু তারা কারো কাছ থেকে কোন সহানুভূতি বা ভালবাসা পায় না।
সরকার এবং এনজিওদের উচিত সমাজ থেকে এই মন্দকে নির্মূল করতে একসঙ্গে কাজ করা। এ জন্য দারিদ্র্য বিমোচন কর্মসূচি জোরদার ও প্রসারিত করতে হবে। সরকারের সামাজিক নিরাপত্তা নেটওয়ার্কও বাড়াতে হবে। শিশুদের কায়িক পরিশ্রমে নিয়োগের বিরুদ্ধে কঠোর আইন প্রণয়ন ও প্রয়োগ করতে হবে। সরকার শিশুরা যাতে স্কুল থেকে ঝরে না পড়ে এবং শিক্ষার অধিকার পায় তা নিশ্চিত করতে হবে। সমাজের বিত্তবান ও সক্ষম ব্যক্তিরাও এ ব্যাপারে এগিয়ে আসতে পারেন।
সমাজে শিশুদের কাজ কখনই কাম্য হওয়া উচিত নয়। বাংলাদেশ ইউনিসেফের ‘সেই ইয়েস টু চিলড্রেন’ কর্মসূচির সাথে সঙ্গতিপূর্ণ হচ্ছে যাতে শিশুদের জন্য ১৫টি বিষয় অন্তর্ভুক্ত রয়েছে। আমাদের অবশ্যই তা বজায় রাখার চেষ্টা করতে হবে এবং আমাদের শিশুদের জন্য শান্তিপূর্ণ, উদ্বেগমুক্ত এবং সুরক্ষিত বিশ্ব নিশ্চিত করতে হবে। অন্যথায় এই সামাজিক সমস্যার কারণে দীর্ঘমেয়াদে আমাদের ভুগতে হবে।
